Trauma-Focussed CBT

Trauma-Focussed Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) is a well-structured, evidence-based approach that supports people to move forward after tough or traumatic experiences. Originally, TF-CBT was developed to support children and adolescents showing signs of trauma. Over time, it’s been adapted for use with adults as well, and is now recognised as a leading treatment for post-traumatic stress and similar challenges. TF-CBT is widely regarded as a gold standard approach for treating PTSD.

What makes TF-CBT stand out is that it extends on traditional Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) by adding strategies specific to addressing trauma, such as exposure therapy. The main goals of the approach are to:

  • Help clients understand how trauma has affected their thoughts, emotions, and actions;

  • Pick up practical tools for handling stress, anxiety, flashbacks, or when they find themselves avoiding reminders of their trauma;

  • Work through stressful memories in a safe, supported way in therapy;

  • Shift negative beliefs that can linger after trauma and replace them with more helpful, balanced perspectives.

The way TF-CBT works is using a step-by-step process that builds on safety and confidence, always working in a person-cantered way. The aim is to help people feel more in control and reduce the grip that past trauma might still have.

TF-CBT is also flexible. It can be tailored for a person’s age, where they’re at in life, and their cultural background. Most of the time, the therapy goes for about 12 to 20 sessions. However, everyone moves through therapy at their own pace, and this can sometimes take longer.

Our clinic highly recommends TF-CBT if you still are experiencing symptoms related to trauma. It has a solid evidence base, gives a clear roadmap for sessions, and most importantly, gives people practical skills and knowledge so they can better understand their symptoms and set themselves up for recovery in the long run. In TF-CBT sessions, clients learn practical skills to manage strong emotions, reduce anxiety, and cope with upsetting memories in a safe, supportive environment. Therapy typically includes education about trauma, relaxation and coping strategies, gradual discussion of the traumatic experience at a comfortable pace. The goal is not to relive trauma, but to reduce its emotional impact, build resilience, and help the client move forward with greater confidence and stability.
